Inspiring Patriotism and Civic Responsibility in Our Youth

The Exchange Club of Newport Harbor proudly sponsors a series of Americanism programs that promote patriotism, civic engagement, and appreciation for the values that unite us as a nation. Through writing, art, and immersive educational experiences, we help young people reflect on what it means to be an American and how they can positively contribute to their community and country.

Patriotic Art Contest

All student artwork is proudly displayed at our Field of Honor for two weeks leading up to Memorial Day, allowing the community to view and celebrate the creativity and patriotism of our youth.

Field of Honor Student Program

Held as part of our annual Field of Honor event, this student-focused program brings patriotism to life. In 2025, more than 700 5th grade students from across the Newport-Mesa Unified School District participated in an educational experience at the Field of Honor. Activities include:

  • Patriotic ceremonies led by Girl Scout Troop #5388, Sons of the American Revolution and musical performances by Sonora Choir and Pomona Band

  • Educational stations highlighting our Flag, the Pledge of Allegiance, Branches of the Military and more.

  • Reflections on freedom, sacrifice, and national pride provided by Gold Star Mothers.

This inspiring event connects students with local veterans and first responders, creating lasting impressions of gratitude and civic responsibility.

Recognition and Celebration

Winners from the Essay and Art contests are honored at special Flag Deck ceremonies in April and May at their schools. Their voices and visions help us all remember the importance of community, country, and character.

Field of Honor

The Americanism Program of Service promotes pride in our country, appreciation for the freedoms granted to American citizens, and gratitude to the men and women who serve/have served in the Armed Forces. Americanism celebrates the country’s rich, unique heritage and inspires unity from coast-to-coast.

Locally, we have furthered this cause through our renowned, Field of Honor, in Castaways Park.  For over 16 years, the Exchange Club of Newport Harbor has planted 1776 flags in honor of our veterans and sponsors an art and essay contest for the Newport-Mesa school district.
